Personal lubricants are important to the sexual act. Also called lube, these are meant to reduce friction between body parts or between your body parts and sex toys.
Not having enough lubrication can break a condom. If you’re experimenting with anal toys or having anal sex, this is also a must as that part of the body does not self-lubricate. Anything that penetrates the butt without lubrication will cause tearing.
There are many types of personal lubricants. The most popular among them are the water-based lubricants. They absorb into the skin and evaporate, so they may dry out during use and may require reapplication. If the sexual act will be done in water, it is best to choose another type as these are water soluble and will disperse when in the pool, hot tub or bath tub. It also has a tendency to cause yeast infection in women, so wash up after using.
Oil-based lubricants are more appropriate for women who are experiencing minor irritations or some disease that affects their vagina. The inflammation of the vulvar nerves, for instance, is often experienced by women in their menopausal years. The biggest disadvantage when using oil-based is that it does not work with a condom.
Silicone-based lubricants do not have any water components and offer a different feel from both the oil-based and the water-based lubes. They last longer than water-based ones and are latex-safe (can be used with a condom). You can use this in water. However, you should never use a silicone-based lubricant with a silicone sex toy as it will dissolve the surface and cause disintegration.
You also need to check if the lube you are using is spermicidal. There are some lubricants that are safe for sperm, often called “fertility lubricants” and are meant for couples trying to conceive.
Astroglide and K-Y jelly are the most popular brands of personal lubricants.
